We have a lot of love for this old bathroom. Tile geeks have walked in and hugged the walls. Yet plumbers and others have urged us to demo as the cracks and age age render it useless in their eyes.

Because we can’t give up on an underdog, we decided to employ the Kintusgi technique “golden joinery” which originated in Japan. The repair method was also born from the Japanese feeling of mottainai, which expresses regret when something is wasted, as well as mushin, the acceptance of change. By using gold mortar, the vessel became more valuable after it was repaired than when it was pristine.

We loved that concept and hired our friend Jonathan Janssen lovingly repair our tiles.
